DISINFO: The European Union is increasingly devouring the sovereignty of the member states
SUMMARY
The fundamental difference between the Eurasian Economic Union project and the European Union is that the EU, with each new stage of its development, increasingly devours the sovereignty of the member states. Economic resources are used less and less for the benefit of ordinary Europeans, but increasingly to satisfy the growing political ambitions of the European bureaucracy.
RESPONSE
A recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about an alleged loss of sovereignty of the EU member states. Pro-Kremlin outlets often portray European states as vassals, puppet states or colonies of the US. The article also exploits one of the key narratives in pro-Kremlin disinformation: "Elites v the People." EU Member States are sovereign countries and make sovereign decisions about their own internal, economic, foreign and security policies. The European Union is explicit on the subject of national sovereignty: “the Member States all remain sovereign and independent states, they have decided to pool some of their 'sovereignty' in areas where it makes sense to work together.”
The European Union is a sovereign entity, created by the voluntary initiative of European nations, and it has its own, independent foreign policy. Its citizens are directly represented in the European Parliament and Member States are represented in the European Council and the Council of the EU.
