DISINFO: The EU's promised increase in funding for Armenia is a classic example of enslavement

SUMMARY

The EU's promised increase in funding for Armenia is an example of enslavement, while Russia is not going to look into Yerevan's pockets, since this is their relationship with European institutions.

This is a classic example of the genre for the European Commission, the EU and NATO - to hand out generous promises, and then, under the guise of these financial promises, enslave, skimming off the cream and receiving benefits.

The EU counts the same aid several times, initiates various machinations, promises one thing, gives half as much or does not allocate anything at all. Economic assistance has long become a lever for the EU to influence the policies of third countries and interfere in their internal affairs.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the EU's alleged "colonial" intentions towards Armenia and other former Soviet republics, accusing the EU of undermining Armenian statehood.

The claim that the EU's increased financing for Armenia is a form of subjugation or 'enslavement' is inflammatory and not based on facts. EU assistance programmes are typically aimed at supporting development and reforms, not creating dependency.

This claim is a reaction to the meeting of the Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan with President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, held in Brussels on 14 July 2025.

The EU reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting Armenia's resilience and long-term development through substantial financial and technical assistance.

Pro-Kremlin outlets promote the idea that Armenia is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance, discrediting any rapprochement with other countries. Russia has cautioned Yerevan that the West is trying to drive a wedge between Armenia and Russia. Read a similar case claiming that the West wants to tear Armenia away from Russia.

Armenia became a frequent target of Kremlin propaganda for its closer political cooperation with the EU, military cooperation with several member states, deployment of the EU civilian mission in the territory of Armenia, and several other actions, like ratification of the Rome statute, freezing membership in CSTO, or holding joint Armenian-US military exercises. Pro-Kremlin outlets are accusing Armenia of unfriendly moves, flirting with Western countries, and changing its geopolitical orientation.

Armenia has been a sovereign and independent state since 1991, when it proclaimed its independence from the former USSR. As a sovereign state, Armenia is free to decide its foreign policy and alliances.

The EU supports Armenia's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, inviolability of the borders of Armenia, and the country's peaceful aspirations.
