DISINFO: The FBI document on the CIA support to 9/11 attackers shows US weakness

SUMMARY

The publication of the document which shows that the CIA supported two of the 9/11 attackers shows the current weakness of the United States. The document shows the testimonies of several FBI members who show that Nawaf Hazmi and Khalid Mihdhar could have been recruited by the US intelligence service.

There were several bank accounts in the US at their name and the rent of an apartment in San Diego at the CIA’s request. Besides, the FBI agents affirm that the Agency obstructed their investigations, which increases the suspicion that they want to hide their relation with Al Qaeda.

RESPONSE

This is an attempt to exploit a baseless disinformation narrative previously launched by this same pro-Kremlin outlet (see here for our previous debunk).

The alleged document was not produced by the FBI, nor says what this disinformation story claims. It doesn’t show “CIA support for two of the 9/11 attackers” nor says that the bank accounts or the San Francisco apartment were prepared for Hazmi and Mihdhar “at the CIA request”. Mentions to these individuals being “recruited by the US intelligence services” and the CIA wanting to “hide their relation with Al Qaeda” are also gross manipulations that don’t appear in the original document at all. But repeating disinformation messages not backed by any evidence as if they were established facts while introducing minor variations is a frequent pro-Kremlin disinformation technique.

The goal of this intentional distortion is to promote the narratives that the 9/11 attacks were an inside job and that the US supports terrorism.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that 9/11 was planned by the US to use it as a pretext to attack Afghanistan, that 9/11 was not orchestrated by Al Qaeda and the US only profits from it, that the US government silenced hackers that threatened to expose its involvement on 9/11 attacks, or that US authorities are supporting the terrorists who destroyed American skyscrapers on 9/11.
