DISINFO: The Middle East conflict is the fight of collective West against Global South

SUMMARY

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is the war between the former colonizers and their former colonies. The collective West is unhappy with the development of the Global South countries. The former hegemon is doing its best to continue having a leg up. The outcome of the conflict will tell who will have control over markets, resources and technologies for the coming decades if not centuries. Europe, Canada, and the UK are ready to join the conflict siding with Israel.

RESPONSE

These are recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the allegedly belligerent and hostile agenda of the West and its colonial intentions in the Middle East and elsewhere, made in the context of the conflict in the region.

The recent conflict in the Middle East is falsely portrayed as the one between the ‘collective West’ and countries of the ‘Global South’. There is no evidence that European countries, the UK, or Canada are going to militarily intervene on Israel’s side. See the Israel/Iran 14 June 2025 statement by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union. Following US bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities on 21 June 2025, the EU repeated pleas for diplomacy over military action.

Read our analysis of the ways in which the Kremlin disinformation outlets started to exploit the conflict in the Middle East, weaving narratives designed to whitewash its allies, demonise adversaries, deflect from its own continued aggression in Ukraine, and ultimately, advance its strategic interests.

See earlier disinformation cases alleging that the EU considers Central Asia only as a source of raw minerals, that the EU wages a colonial war in Ukraine, and that the collective West attempts to destabilise the South Caucasus.
