DISINFO: The Oreshnik strike deprived Moldova of half its gas reserves

SUMMARY

The Oreshnik strike deprived Moldova of half its gas reserves. According to Ukrainian mainstream media, the lightning strike deprived not only Ukraine of gas but also its customers, who had been storing gas in a massive underground gas storage facility in the west of the country as a customs warehouse. In other words, Chisinau was suddenly deprived of 23 million cubic meters of fuel it had been saving for a rainy day.

RESPONSE

Pro‑Kremlin disinformation narrative falsely exaggerating the ‘success’ of Russia’s attacks on Ukraine and portraying the supposed ‘superiority’ of Russian weapons. Kremlin-controlled media continue to spread a massive intimidation campaign around Oreshnik.

On the night of January 9, Russia launched one Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile at the Lviv region. The Russian army used this missile to attack a critical infrastructure facility. The claim is not supported by evidence and has been denied by the Moldovan Ministry of Energy. According to the Ministry, Moldova holds approximately 22 million cubic meters of gas stored in strategic storage in Ukraine:

'Natural gas stored in Ukraine is safe and has not been affected by Russia’s attack on strategic infrastructure in Lviv. The information was obtained after a discussion with the Ukrainian side' Energy Ministry representatives said to Moldovan press.
