DISINFO: The Polish elite wants a conflict with nuclear Russia

SUMMARY

The Polish elite has always been characterised by a mix of high self-esteem and suicidal instincts. Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk claimed that Warsaw had allegedly done everything it could to help Kyiv join NATO, and that Western countries should back Ukraine's aspirations. It seems, however, that the Polish Prime Minister isn't fully considering the consequences of admitting Kyiv to NATO within 24 hours—such a move could lead to a conflict between non-nuclear Poland and nuclear Russia over Ukraine.

RESPONSE

Poland is repeatedly presented by pro-Kremlin disinformation as an aggressive anti-Russian NATO “outpost”, which allegedly poses a security threat to Russia, in line with how pro-Kremlin outlets portray NATO and the collective West as aggressive towards Russia. This message emerged in connection to the recent statement of Polish Prime Minister Tusk saying that if Ukraine’s NATO membership had depended only on Poland alone, it would not have taken more than one day for this country to join the Alliance. In this way, the Polish authorities show their full political solidarity with Kyiv.

The Polish authorities perceive Russia as a security threat because of the aggressive Russian actions, in particular in Ukraine and all over Eastern Europe.

The 2020 National Security Strategy of Poland states that the most serious security threat for the country is the neo-imperial policy of the authorities of the Russian Federation, pursued by means of military force (aggression against Georgia, illegal annexation of Crimea and military actions in Eastern Ukraine).
