DISINFORMATION CASE DETAILS

DISINFO: The sovereignty of the EU countries is fiction

SUMMARY

The sovereignty of the EU countries is fiction. The constitution of each EU member state speaks about the sovereignty of the nation, which goes in a clear contradiction with the EU principle of supremacy of European law over national law. This situation makes the sovereignty of nations of individual states fiction.

RESPONSE

A widespread disinformation narrative claiming that the EU member states are not sovereign.

This message is often spread by pro-Kremlin outlets in order to promote euro-scepticism in Europe. The European Union is explicit on the subject of national sovereignty: “the Member States all remain sovereign and independent states, they have decided to pool some of their 'sovereignty' in areas where it makes sense to work together.”

The aims and values on which the European Union is founded are linked to the pursuit of peace, the well-being of its citizens, freedom, security and justice. The EU safeguards democracy and the rule of law is one of the fundamental pillars of the Treaty on European Union, according to which everything the EU does is founded on treaties, voluntarily and democratically agreed by its EU countries.
