DISINFO: The Syrian elections was the same as the US - both contested

SUMMARY

Bashar al-Assad was re-elected. Some contest it, but in the US, the election of Joe Biden was also contested. So it is everywhere the same.

There is humanitarian aid in Syria that comes from the UN. But the US doesn’t support that. China and Russia offered vaccines against COVID-19 but besides that, there is no other country. The WHO, as an international body, also offered some vaccines, but besides that, no other country helps.

The sanctions are killing the Syrian people. Contrary to what is claimed they are not targeted. They target all the Syrian people who see the poverty worsening and the cost of living rising, they cannot make ends meet. Sanctions have no result, except punishing the entire Syrian people.

RESPONSE

Recurrent Pro-Kremlin narratives about the Syrian conflict, elections and sanctions.

US and Syrian presidential elections cannot be compared. There is no basis to support the claims that the US 2020 presidential elections were stolen. However, as High Representative Josep Borrell declared:

The elections that took place in Syria on 26 May met none of the criteria of a genuinely democratic vote, do not contribute to the settlement of the conflict... The EU considers that the elections ... undermine efforts to find a sustainable solution to the Syrian conflict. It cannot lead to any measure of international normalisation with the Syrian regime. The political process must be fully inclusive to ensure that all segments of Syria’s society are involved in shaping the country’s future unity and reconciliation.

Since the beginning of the war, the EU and its Member States have been the largest humanitarian donor to the Syrian crisis, having contributed over €24.9 billion to projects inside Syria and in neighboring countries. During the fifth Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” on 29 and 30 March 2021 were announced €3.7 billion of pledges by the EU, with €1.12 billion coming from the European Commission and €2.6 billion from EU Member States.

It is incorrect and manipulative to say that only China and Russia help, inside Syria, EU humanitarian assistance supplies over 40 humanitarian partners working countrywide where needs are the most acute.

Sanctions do not aim at the entire Syrian people as a whole. The expression itself is a contradiction. EU sanctions against Syria are targeting in 2021 a list of 283 persons for both an assets freeze and a travel ban, and 70 entities subject to an assets freeze. In the US also, the mandatory sanctions under the Caesar Act target foreign persons who facilitate the Assad regime’s acquisition of goods, services, or technologies that support the regime’s military activities as well as its aviation and oil and gas production industries.
