DISINFO: The Three Seas Initiative may promote anti-Russian military steps

SUMMARY

The main goal of the Polish foreign policy of the last thirty years has been to do everything possible to neutralise the Russian influence on the Western direction. These activities include unsuccessful exploration of shale gas in Poland and attempts to diversify its energy sources. Poland is taking the lead in all the areas where the Russian influence can be neutralised.

[With regard to the Three Seas Initiative], the idea of Piłsudski to create a sanitary cordon and a barrier against Russia has been modified. There is an alternative opinion that the creation of transport and digital infrastructure [within the Three Seas Initiative] may enable the deployment of military units and equipment. Someday, the plans may change, which will lead to the emergence of another problematic region in terms of security.

Poland and the Baltic states are a very stable anti-Russian component at the Three Seas Initiative, but it is doubtful that other participants of this organisation will come to an agreement on the permanent anti-Russian policy. This situation can be achieved only under strong external pressure.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about regional organisations in Central and Eastern Europe – this narrative presents such organisations as Eastern Partnership and the Three Seas Initiative as anti-Russian projects managed by the USA.

This text also promotes a widespread narrative about Russophobic and anti-Russian Poland. The pro-Kremlin media regularly accuse the political elites of Poland and the Baltic states of Russophobia and the implementation of anti-Russian policies.

The statement that the Three Seas Initiative is an anti-Russian and anti-EU project fully controlled by the USA is unfounded. The Three Seas Initiative does not have any military tasks or goals.

The Three Seas Initiative is a forum of 12 countries from Central and Eastern Europe launched in 2015. The main goal of this Initiative is to promote better connectivity among the Member States, with a particular focus on infrastructure and energy. The main projects discussed at the forums of the Three Seas Initiative are the Via CarpathiaBaltic-Adriatic CorridorVia BalticaRail Baltica and the LNG infrastructure in Poland and Croatia.
