DISINFO: The UK interferes in the internal affairs of Georgia

SUMMARY

The UK, having forgotten its own problems after Brexit, threatening the collapse of the country, continues to interfere in the internal affairs of the South Caucasian Republics and cynically displays an extremely friendly and sympathetic position towards Georgia. Such gestures, given Britain's ominous reputation in world history, cannot but evoke thoughts about what kind of plan it is preparing for Russia this time. Not a single people, not a single leader can stand alone against the cunning and centuries-old sophistication of such a well-organised force that penetrates any state.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the UK allegedly interfering in the internal affairs of the South Caucasus states, in particular, Georgia.

There is no evidence that the UK interferes in the internal affairs of the South Caucasian states, including Georgia. The claim appeared as a response to 7 Western countries, including the UK, calling on Russia to reverse its recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as well as withdraw its armed forces from the territory of these Republics.

Georgia and the UK enjoy friendly relations and a strategic partnership that date back to the First Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918-1921). Diplomatic relations between Georgia and the UK were established in 1919 and restored on 27 April 1992. The two countries enjoy multidimensional relations and successful cooperation in political, defence and security, trade and economy, culture, education and other fields. High-level visits are often conducted at both legislative and executive levels. Following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, Georgia and the UK signed the Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement on 21 October 2019, which came into force from 1 January 2021. 18 Agreements are in force between Georgia and the UK, which cover a broad spectrum of cooperation.

Pro-Kremlin outlets often claim Western states interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
