DISINFO: The UK is behind the Kyiv regime's provocation at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant

SUMMARY

Just in time for the Munich Security Conference, the Kyiv regime staged a provocation at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

[...] all these provocations to create the necessary background for Western conferences are carried out like clockwork! It is enough to recall the strike by a Ukrainian missile on the Okhmatdyt hospital on July 8, 2024, on the eve of the NATO summit in Washington, which took place on July 9-11.

The strike on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant also shows the signature style of the UK “cousins”.

RESPONSE

This narrative is part of an ongoing pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign about nuclear threats, linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian authorities stated that a Russian drone strike with a high explosive warhead struck the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant, damaging a protective shield which was built following the 1986 disaster to prevent further radiation leaks.

There are no confirmations that it was a provocation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, much less about the UK’s involvement in this attack. These accusations against Ukraine, as well as against the UK, aim to distract from the Kremlin’s nuclear blackmail tactics, including threats to use tactical nuclear weapons and plans to provoke a nuclear disaster at Russian-controlled power plants.

The head of the UN-backed international atomic energy watchdog, IAEA – which has a team based at the former Soviet nuclear site in Ukraine – issued a statement confirming that the strike had caused a fire, describing it as “a deeply concerning incident that underlines the persistent risks to nuclear safety during the military conflict.” IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said the team heard the explosion at 1:50 am local time, followed by smoke and associated fire visible from their dormitory rooms.

The article also promotes a false narrative about the strike of an Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv by the Ukrainian Army. Open-source intelligence collective Bellingcat published a detailed report concluding that a Russian missile hit the hospital.
