DISINFO: The US and partners are destroying Syria
SUMMARY
As expected, the West is jubilant, they are delighted, destroying Syria and its population. The leaders of European states are loudly declaring that Syria will be “free”. Biden, it is unclear from what state he was pulled out, from what closet, he looks pretty creepy, made an urgent address to the American people, where he attributed almost all possible merits to himself... And the respect for the choice of the Syrian people, which all Western leaders are now talking about, was shown to be “gigantic”. Today alone, the Americans struck 75 targets, the Israelis several dozen more. So it is understand perfectly well what kind of “respect” this is and what they really want to do in Syria.
RESPONSE
This claim was made in the context of and during Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham's (HTS) capture of key Syrian cities which lead to the final collapse of Al-Assad’s regime on 08 December 2024. This is also a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, portraying any actions by opponents of the pro-Russian Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in Syria as a Western-sponsored colour revolution.
Heads of the European Union countries, the US, Israel and the UN welcomed the fall of Al-Assad’s regime while emphasising that Syria has a historic opportunity to build a peaceful country after decades of repressive rule. It was also stated that the fight against the terrorist organisation ISIS, which operates in Syria, will continue. It was in this context that President Joe Biden, on December 8, announced that the United States had launched airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria to prevent the terrorists from regaining ground after the fall of Bashar Al-Assad.
The US strikes against ISIS leaders, operatives, and camps were conducted as part of the ongoing mission to disrupt, degrade, and defeat ISIS, in order to prevent the terrorist group from conducting external operations and to ensure that ISIS does not seek to take advantage of the current situation to reconstitute in central Syria.
"The operation struck over 75 targets using multiple U.S. Air Force assets, including B-52s, F-15s, and A-10s. Battle damage assessments are underway, and there are no indications of civilian casualties," US Central Command said in a statement.
The Syrian civil war began in 2011, when Al-Assad’s regime responded to pro-democratic protests in the country with military force and detentions. Later this civil war escalated into a multifaceted conflict involving domestic opposition groups, extremist factions and international powers. Al-Assad’s regime kept rebel forces at bay for more than a decade with Iranian and Russian military support.
International human rights organisations and democratic countries have repeatedly accused Al-Assad's regime, supported by Russia and Iran, of excessive use of force and indiscriminate airstrikes on residential areas of Syrian settlements, the use of chemical weapons against civilians, and many other human rights violations.
