It is not true that the US has failed to protect itself from the Covid-19 pandemic. The previous US administration's response to the spread of the virus was initially contradictory, but policies to prevent and contain the pandemic have aligned despite differences in approach by individual American states. As of May 2021, the United States had 573,722 Covid-related deaths in a population of 328.2 million. The Covid-19 threat in the US has been addressed through shutdowns and social distancing and containment and prevention policies. As of 6 May 2021, 252 million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the United States.
Furthermore, the article’s claim that the US has not assisted other nations to cope with the pandemic is also not true. The US has never stopped its assistance and emergency policies in support of foreign countries severely affected by the first waves of the pandemic, such as China in February 2020 or Italy in March-April 2020, or by the current wave, such as the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in March 2021.
Additionally, the United States has provided an initial $2 billion contribution to Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, to support vaccination for people around the world through the COVAX Advanced Market Commitment.
