DISINFO: The US is going to create a military base in Armenia to pressure against Iran and Russia
SUMMARY
If the claims about the trilateral memorandum are true, it will open up geopolitical influence in the region for the United States without establishing an official military base. That is, the White House will legitimise US military presence in the South Caucasus under the guise of ensuring the security of geo-economic projects in the region. This will also serve as a geostrategic manoeuvre, becoming a tool of pressure against Iran and Russia.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Western countries are using Armenia as a platform against Iran and Russia. It promotes a distorted and aggressive image of the United States without any factual basis. This narrative is part of a broader pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign targeting Armenia amid its growing cooperation with the West.
The claim has been made in the context of the US proposal to control the corridor between Azerbaijan and its Nakhchivan enclave. Thomas Barrack, the U.S. ambassador to Türkiye, said that Washington was considering taking control of a strategic road connecting mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhichevan exclave under a 100-year lease as part of efforts to facilitate normalisation between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Barrack described the proposal as a means to address long-standing tensions between Yerevan and Baku over a stretch of road in Armenia’s Syunik region. The President of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, has also confirmed the US proposal.
According to the political expert, Olesya Vartanyan, who has written about the proposal of the US for the first time on 1st July, said that “It’s more akin to logistics or airport management. Armenia would retain full jurisdiction, while the company would simply ensure transparency and coordination. In emergencies or incidents, it’s Yerevan that would still take charge”.
Since the proposal had not been officially published, details were not known. However, the Armenian side has already rejected the proposal.
Media outlets with anti-Western sentiment often exploit ambiguity to advance their agendas. In this case, the lack of clarity around the proposal allowed them to link it to existing disinformation narratives such as encircling Russia, ousting Russia from the South Caucasus, and using Armenia as a platform for collecting intelligence information.
