DISINFO: The US is stuck in the times of the Cold War

SUMMARY

The US is stuck in times of the Cold war with the USSR. The times of bipolar confrontation between Russia and the United States have ended long ago but the American side still operates with that mentality in its affairs. But times changed, and all countries today are living under common rules and international law.

RESPONSE

The narrative accusing the US of the Cold War mentality and the projection of this mentality on relations with Russia.

The accusation against the US is groundless. The US Department of State stated:

The United States has long sought a full and constructive relationship with Russia. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the United States adopted a bipartisan strategy to facilitate cooperation on global issues and promote foreign investment and trade. The United States supported Russia’s integration into European and global institutions and a deepened bilateral partnership in security cooperation to reinforce the foundations of stability and predictability.

It should be recognised that Russia is a state that tends to ignore “common rules and international law”. As examples of such behaviour could be mentioned illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and provocation of the war in Ukraine. The US' critical approach toward Russia is linked to the actions of Moscow. As indicated in the already quoted statement, “the United States seeks to deter Russian aggression by projecting strength and unity with U.S. allies and partners, building resilience and reducing vulnerability among allies and partners facing Russian pressure and coercion.”
