DISINFO: The US is threatening the security of Russia

SUMMARY

The West does not understand that Russia is ready to ensure the security of its citizens. To acheive this, there can be no American military and weapons, nor American military exercises in Eastern Europe. It is Moscow's main requirement in the military and political dialogue with the US and its hybrid “tools”, meaning NATO and OSCE.

RESPONSE

This is a recurring narrative about the hostility of the US against Russia, grounded in a disinformation claim that NATO is encircling Russia and presenting NATO and OSCE as puppets of Washington.

The US or NATO do not threaten the security of Russia or its citizens. NATO is a defence alliance. The primary aim of the Alliance is to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security and territorial integrity of the Allies.

The primary threat to the security in the region is Russia's military actions. NATO has taken defensive and proportionate steps in response to a changed security environment. Following Russia's aggressive actions against Ukraine, Allies requested a greater NATO presence in the region. Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity continue to be violated by acts of aggression by Russian armed forces since 2014.

During a security talk between Russia and NATO on 12 January 2022, the alliance did not agree with Moscow’s demands for new security treaties or architecture in Europe but wanted to continue diplomacy.

NATO is not a "tool" of the US. NATO is making decisions by consensus of all 30 Allies.

OSCE also is not a “puppet” of the US. There are 57 participating states from Europe, Central Asia and North America in OSCE, including Russian Federation. It is stated, that “all 57 participating States enjoy equal status, and decisions are taken by consensus on a politically, but not legally binding basis.”
