DISINFO: The US seek the destruction of Russia since the end of the Cold War
SUMMARY
When, at the end of the Cold War, the USSR, after decades of economic inertia disintegrated into various, mostly powerless states, whose already weak economies completely collapsed in the following years, this naturally offered enormous strategic prospects for the USA as the only remaining superpower. After all, all the former Soviet republics could now be easily infiltrated and destabilised. Since then, the US and its European allies have been bringing decades of destabilisation, (attempts at) regime change, death and destruction to the countries of the former USSR in their vain attempt to destroy Russia geopolitically. The Americans left a clear mark in Georgia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Russia and Belarus, among others. And today there is clear American-European infiltration in Armenia and Moldova. Above all, however, the United States seeks the destruction of Russia.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, accusing the USA of an anti-Russian and neo-colonial policy, for attempts to encircle and destroy Russia, destabilise post-Soviet countries and isolate Russia. Such disinformation narratives aim to deflect any responsibility for Moscow’s actions. See also Russian Myths: no.5 Encirclement.
From the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the emergence of a new Russia up to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in 2014, Western countries have been trying to establish good-neighbourly relations with Moscow. According to the 1997 Founding Act on Mutual Relations, Cooperation, and Security between NATO and the Russian Federation, Russia was viewed as a partner of the alliance. The EU has conducted regular summits with the Russian leadership for years up to 2014 to enhance relations. The summits were suspended due to Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea.
The sharp deterioration in relations between Western countries and Russia is directly linked to Moscow's illegal and aggressive actions. Several issues affect bilateral relations, in particular Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Pro-Kremlin outlets advance the claim that the post-Soviet space, especially the Caucasus and Central Asia, is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempt to discredit any other cooperation between the West. Russia warns that the main goal of the West is neo-colonial control over the Caucasus and Central Asia.
The EU and US recognise the importance of the sovereignty and strategic autonomy of the countries in the Caucasus and Central Asia, individually and as a region. The EU builds its relations with these countries based on mutual consent, bilateral interests, and benefits.
