DISINFO: The West cannot accept Azerbaijan's success
SUMMARY
Pressures against Azerbaijan are not accidental. In a few days, Baku will host an internationally important event - the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). Western circles, in particular, cannot accept Azerbaijan’s successes.
RESPONSE
A disinformation narrative about Azerbaijan and the West.
Many Western countries and officials have expressed their support for Azerbaijan at COP29.
As regards the critics, most of them are about violations of human rights in Azerbaijan. On 24 October 2024, the European Parliament passed a resolution preceding COP29 condemning human rights violations in Azerbaijan. See also the Speech by High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell at the EP plenary on the issues of human rights, international law and normalization of relations regarding Azerbaijan/Armenia in which he stated:
"Today’s debate is taking place less than three weeks before the beginning of the COP29 United Nations climate change conference in Baku. The conference will gather world leaders and the international climate community to advance on the global climate agenda. But it will also draw the world’s attention to the conference’s host country [Azerbaijan].
Our debate today is therefore very timely. COP29 is an opportunity for the Azerbaijani authorities to demonstrate the commitment to their international human rights obligations. It is an opportunity to reverse the worrying trend of the past years of an increasingly shrinking space for civil society, intensifying repression of independent media and dissenting voices, and the growing number of arbitrary arrests".
Additionally, on 3 October, 60 U.S. lawmakers signed an open letter urging Secretary of State Antony Blinken to make use of COP29 to "advocate for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, hostages, and prisoners of war."
Allegations of human rights abuses in Azerbaijan have been thoroughly documented by international human rights organisations.
