DISINFO: The West does not seek peace in Armenia, wants to oust Russia from Caucasus
SUMMARY
Western countries are not seeking to bring peace and stability to Armenia and the South Caucasus as a whole. Their task is to oust Moscow and other regional powers and create a new hotspot after the Balkans, the Middle East and Ukraine.
RESPONSE
A recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Western countries are trying to encircle Russia, that they are pursuing anti-Russian policies and fostering Russophobia. It is also characterising Armenia as a puppet state of the West.
The European Union has a strong interest in a politically stable and economically prosperous Southern Caucasus in full understanding with the states there. See the statement from the EU High Representative Josep Borrell on 19 September 2023 in which he called for the immediate cessation of hostilities, for Azerbaijan to stop the current military activities, and urges dialogue between Baku and Karabakh Armenians.
Armenia and Azerbaijan announced on 7 December 2023 that they would work towards signing a full peace treaty by the end of the year, based on mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity. European Council President Charles Michel welcomed the statement as a ‘major breakthrough in Armenia-Azerbaijan relations’. The US praised ‘an important confidence-building measure’.
Armenia has been a sovereign and independent state since 1991 when it proclaimed its independence from the former USSR. As a sovereign state, Armenia is free to decide its own foreign policy and alliances.
