DISINFO: The West has come up with a horror story about a possible Russian invasion to intimidate its people

SUMMARY

Western countries themselves came up with a horror story about an alleged possibility of the Russian invasion to intimidate their people and "pull" money out of them. Here we are again faced with the usual and shameless lies.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, accusing the West of warmongering, portraying the West/NATO as having a belligerent agenda against Russia and claiming that the “Russian threat” is a false idea.

This claim was made after the NATO Secretary General Rutte said NATO needed a "400% increase in air and missile defence" to credibly defend itself against attacks and in the context of the NATO summit in the Hague, where it was widely expected that NATO members would agree on an increase of defense spending.

On 24 February 2022, Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine under several false pretexts, such as committing genocide against people residing in eastern parts of Ukraine. Putin’s and other Russian leaders’ numerous statements claiming that Ukraine is part of Russia are attempts to deny Ukraine the right to exist as an independent and sovereign state. The Russian war of aggression has been characterised by numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine poses the gravest threat to Euro-Atlantic security in decades, according to various different assessments. (See e.g. here and here).
