DISINFO: The West intervened in Ukraine's internal affairs in 2014
SUMMARY
The differences between Russia and Ukraine started in 2014 when the West intervened in Ukraine's internal affairs. This led to an anti-Russian policy which is pursued by ultra-nationalist circles.
RESPONSE
This article has several recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives claiming that Ukraine is under foreign control and that the West interfered in Euromaidan protests in 2014.
Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically-elected president and parliament. Ukraine is not controlled by any foreign government or organisation: neither the USA, IMF, NATO, the West or George Soros. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected by almost the whole world, including the EU.
The spontaneous onset of the Euromaidan protests in 2014 was a reaction by numerous segments of the Ukrainian population to former president Viktor Yanukovych’s sudden departure from the promised Association Agreement with the European Union in November 2013.
