DISINFO: The West is a lawless land and Russia the land of Human Rights and Rule of Law: a comparison of Oleg Sentsov and Julian Assange.

SUMMARY

It is not a game, it is not even the principle of double standards, it is an elimination of law as such, not only of international law, it is a question of contempt for justice and law in general.

Remember, it was the same with Oleg Sentsov. They made him, from a man who was preparing a terrorist act, who was arrested with explosives, they made him a great world director, as they say. He never made a single film in his life that could be considered to have cultural or artistic value. With the help of the media and Western political support, he was made a supposedly great director who was allegedly persecuted on Russian territory for ideological and political reasons. He had explosives in his bag, why do you call him a politician?

Assange is one of them. Assange did not have a bag with explosives. It was Assange who was terrorised and tortured. They simply destroyed him.

Sentsov was arrested and brought to justice. He was not tortured, he was fed. He was examined by a doctor, then he transferred to Ukraine. That's all.

RESPONSE

Recurrent narrative about the lawless West, where human rights are systematically violated, whereas Russia is the land where the rule of law flourishes and human rights are strictly respected. An irrelevant comparison between Julian Assange and Oleg Sentsov is made.

Oleg Sentsov is a debutant movie maker who produced artistic movies with a limited audience but which were respected in the profession. Gamer, his first feature, debuted at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2012 winning awards at three Khanty-Mansiyskand Truskavets festivals. His second film, Numbers is about a strict dystopian society which is suddenly disrupted when its leader is overthrown. It was shown at the 70th anniversary of the Berlin Film Festival.

Sentsov, was detained in May 2014 by the Russian authorities and a year later sentenced to 20 years in prison for “plotting terrorist acts” against pro-Russian organisations in Crimea. His Ukrainian citizenship was disregarded, he endured a long hunger strike and was later used as a bargaining chip in a prisoner exchange with Ukraine. The Russian Human Rights Center Memorial declared Oleg Sentsov a political prisoner. Amnesty International called for Sentsov's immediate release and writing:

"He was convicted in a military court in the Russian Federation, following a grossly unfair trial, on politically-motivated charges and his conviction was based on “confessions” obtained under torture."

The European Parliament also adopted a resolution in June 2018 that demanded that the Russian authorities release "Ukrainian political prisoner Oleg Sentsov". Oleg Sentsov was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2018 by the European Parliament.

This part of interview featured in this article drawing attention to the detention conditions of Julian Assange, amongst others is an attempt of “Whataboutism - see our article”- a rhetorical trick to deflect attention from an unpleasant conversation.
