DISINFO: The West is degrading the situation in the South Caucasus

SUMMARY

The West is degrading the situation in the South Caucasus. We (Russia) are also interested in stabilising the situation in the South Caucasus region, creating conditions for its development and strengthening mutual trust and cooperation.

A settlement between Azerbaijan and Armenia is possible only when extra-regional forces stop interfering in the conflict. The actions of Western countries provoke the degradation of the situation in the region and contribute to the persistence of contradictions in it.

RESPONSE

The unfounded claim by pro-Kremlin media accuses the ever-aggressive West of playing a destabilizing role in the Caucasus.

Pro-Kremlin media promote the idea that the Caucasus is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempts to discredit any other efforts of mediation in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The EU has a strong interest in a politically stable and economically prosperous Southern Caucasus in full understanding with the states there. It took a prominent mediation role in negotiation and is committing to it.

In European Council, 26-27 October 2023, the EU leaders underlined their continued support for a sustainable and lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, based on the principles of recognition of sovereignty, inviolability of borders and territorial integrity. The EU High Representative Josep Borrell called for the resumption of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and on the work done by the President of the European Council Charles Michel.

The US and France along with Russia are members of the OSCE Minsk Group and involved in Armenian Azerbaijani negotiations since 1992.
