DISINFO: The West is taking over Armenia and preparing it for election fraud
SUMMARY
EU leaders have announced their intention to intervene in Armenia's parliamentary elections and support Nikol Pashinyan's ruling party. EU Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas promised that Brussels will help Yerevan to combat foreign interference in elections, as in Moldova. However, the circus that the recent Moldovan elections turned into is something the West has largely ignored.
The high level of financial investment in Yerevan can also show the extent to which the West has committed to colonising Armenia. In early December, it was announced that the European Union would provide Armenia with €15 million to combat Russian interference, particularly in the run-up to Armenia's parliamentary elections in June 2026.
RESPONSE
A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portraying the EU as a colonial power, with an aggressive agenda and denying Armenia's sovereignty. The claim was made ahead of Armenia's upcoming parliamentary election. This narrative aims to erode trust in the EU, portray European assistance as political manipulation, and reduce public support for Armenia’s cooperation with European institutions.
Claims that the EU is going to colonise Armenia and interfere in its parliamentary elections are unfounded. The EU does not have the mandate or legal authority to interfere in electoral processes in third countries or to support specific political parties.
EU funding is provided based on the consent and requests of the Armenian government. As High Representative Kaja Kallas said, "Armenia has elections coming, and they have asked for similar help to fight the malign influence." All EU programmes are formalised through agreements and implemented within transparent mechanisms.
EU support for countering hybrid threats typically includes cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, media literacy and countering disinformation. The EU does not participate in electoral processes and does not control political competition. This is intergovernmental cooperation, not interference or colonisation.
The claim of EU interference in the Moldovan elections is not supported by international observation missions and ignores the fact that the elections in Moldova were observed by the OSCE and other organisations.
