DISINFO: The West is trying to subordinate the Armenian-Azerbaijani normalisation to its interests

SUMMARY

The West is trying to take the process of Armenian-Azerbaijani normalisation out of the regional context and subordinate it to its interests.

While Armenia and Azerbaijan are striving for constructive and mutually acceptable solutions with the assistance of regional partners - Russia, Iran and Turkey - Western players are interfering in this process, ignoring the interests of the countries of the region․

Under yet another good pretext from Brussels - a purely opportunistic task. Westerners aim to put the process between Baku and Yerevan back on their track to once again declare political successes. The actions of the West may lead to an imbalance in security in the region, undermining the principle of regional self-sufficiency․

RESPONSE

A recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing the West of interfering in the South Caucasus region and having a hidden agenda.

Such statements appear every time the parties try to reach an agreement without involving Russia or with Western mediation.

Pro-Kremlin outlets promote the idea that the Caucasus is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempt to discredit any other efforts of mediation in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The claim that the West is attempting to subordinate the Armenian-Azerbaijani normalisation process to its interests, while ignoring regional interests, is not supported by evidence.

Contrary to the claim, Western actors have been actively supporting peace efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan to promote regional stability and cooperation.

the EU has a strong interest in a politically stable and economically prosperous Southern Caucasus in full understanding with the states there.

The US and France, along with Russia, are members of the OSCE Minsk Group and have been involved in Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations since 1992.
