SUMMARY

The collective West, including the most hostile NATO and EU countries, continues to exert a negative influence on the situation in the region. Western intelligence services are actively trying to destabilise the situation within the Union State [of Russia and Belarus].

The Ukrainian crisis is being used as a tool for destabilisation, with a wide range of capabilities of Western intelligence services being used.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about a belligerent West trying to encircle Russia and destabilise the Union State of Russia and Belarus. The article also contains a pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portraying NATO as an aggressive and hostile alliance planning to attack Belarus and Russia. No evidence is provided to support the claims.

The article does not address the fact that Russia has started an unjustified and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine, and that Belarus is an accomplice in aggression in this war. Belarus has served as a staging post for Russian troops, missiles and aircraft, both before and after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Although Lukashenka claims that Belarusian troops have not joined the conflict, Russian troops in Belarus have been allowed passage into Ukraine by Belarusian border guards and Belarus’s air defence and traffic control systems, along with the country’s fuelling stations, have also been made available to Moscow. Furthermore, Lukashenka has said his troops will partake in military action “if it is necessary for Belarus and Russia.” Lukashenka confirms that rockets are fired at Ukraine from the territory of Belarus. Moreover, Belarus is hosting dozens of Russian nuclear weapons and will prepare facilities for the planned deployment of Moscow’s newest hypersonic ballistic missile.

On 2 March 2022, the Council of the EU imposed further sanctions on Belarus for its role in the Russian military aggression of Ukraine. The UK and the U.S. Treasury have also imposed similar measures.
