DISINFO: The West seeks to control over the Kazakhstan’s information space
SUMMARY
The West is not interested in the development of independent media in Kazakhstan. It seeks to take control of the country's information space to promote its own agenda.
Much of this has been achieved thanks to generous funding from embassies, Soros Foundation, USAID and special programs. The European Union allocates 1.5 billion euros for human rights and the fight for freedom.
Conducting information wars with the aim of spreading Russophobia and Sinophobia is highlighted as a separate item in the US strategy for Central Asia.
As the conflict between the West and Russia and China intensifies, the intensity of information wars, including in the Central Asian region, will increase.
RESPONSE
This claim is a mix of pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives claiming that the West is waging a hybrid war against Russia. This narrative fits into the broader disinformation theme about the West’s allegedly belligerent and hostile agenda against Russia, and about its alleged plans to destabilise and encircle Russia.
The EU and US recognise the importance of the sovereignty and strategic autonomy of the Central Asian States, individually and as a region. Tackling common security challenges and building region’s resilience are among priority strands for the EU-Central Asia and US-Central Asia partnerships. The US – Kazakhstan and EU- Kazakhstan partnership are not directed against Russia or any other country.
The US strategy on Central Asia aims to build a more stable and prosperous region that is connected to global markets and open to international investment; and has robust democratic institutions, rule of law, and respect for human rights.
The article advances the claim that Central Asia is within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempts to discredit any other cooperation between the West.
The EU is supporting Independent media and its capacity building in different regions of the worlds through different projects. That includes projects dedicated to qualitative journalism and business sustainability, capacity building activities and research. The objectives of these projects is to support the work of independent media, not to regulate the content.
According to a Press Freedom Index, Russia is in 164th place out of 180 countries, while Kazakhstan, according to the same index ranks in 134 place. According to the ranking, the European Union, is the region of the world where it is easiest for journalists to work.
