DISINFO: The West showed its imperialist attitude toward the global south at the Jeddah meeting

SUMMARY

The Jeddah meeting is not about peace. It is very strange to hold it without Russia. It is a miserable attempt by the West to convey its attitudes to the global South. These are two different platforms. Ukraine is a tool for confrontation between the collective West and Russia.

RESPONSE

This claim combines a set of recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets aimed at belittling the role of the EU, the US and Ukraine's other partners in searching for peaceful ways to end hostilities. It also seeks to work up sentiments of anti-colonialism / anti-americanism and stir up opposition against US and European states. It seek to deflect responsibility from Russia's illegal armed agression and full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Participants in the Jeddah meeting, which lasted for two days and ended on 6 August 2023, discussed key principles for a peaceful end to Russia's aggression. More than 40 countries from the gulf region, Asia and Latin America, including China, India, the United States, and European countries, but not Russia, took part in the Saudi-hosted talks.

The Ukrainian government said that participants agreed that any peace treaty to end Russia’s war against Ukraine must be based on respect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the UN Charter.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented a peace formula in early 2023, which is supported by the EU. President of the European Council Charles Michel said at the news conference of the EU-Ukraine summit in Kyiv in February 2023: “Both Ukraine and the EU share the common goal of ending this war — based on respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We therefore support Ukraine’s Peace Formula initiative and will actively work with Ukraine on the 10-point peace plan. We also back the idea of a Peace Formula Summit to launch this plan.”
