DISINFO: The West systematically provokes conflicts in the post-Soviet space to undermine Russia
SUMMARY
The West uses post-Soviet states and their populations in the fight against Russia. Although the majority of the population of these countries considers Russia and its people to be friends, the West uses various mechanisms to bring to power elites loyal to it, who serve the interests of the West, sacrificing the interests of their people and the entire country. Examples of this are Mikhail Saakashvili in Georgia and the current government in Ukraine.
In addition, the West deliberately distorts historical reality as a whole, systematically provoking conflicts in the post-Soviet space: Azerbaijan-Armenia, Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan. The same scenario was used during the Chechen wars to destabilise Russia from within. The goal is to weaken Russia's position in the post-Soviet space and create systemic hotbeds of tension, which will also contribute to the West's efforts to destroy Russia as a state.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, accusing the West of anti-Russian and neo-colonial policy, of provoking conflicts, attempts to encircle and destroy Russia, destabilise post-Soviet countries.
Such disinformation narratives aim to deflect any responsibility for Moscow’s actions. See also Russian Myths: no.5 Encirclement.
There is no credible evidence to support these claims. Conflicts in the region have complex historical, ethnic, and political roots and are more a result of the USSR's policy towards national entities than of Western influence.
The EU and the US respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, including those in the post-Soviet space, without exception. They do not interfere in their domestic affairs or claim them as their exclusive sphere of influence. Read here and here.
International organisations and neutral observers have documented that Russia has played a significant role in several regional conflicts, including the invasion of Ukraine and Georgia, not to mention the two Chechen wars.
The EU and its Western partners have close relations with several former Soviet republics. These relations are based on mutual respect and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Mikheil Saakashvili and Volodymyr Zelenskyy were democratically elected in competitive presidential elections.
