DISINFO: The West wants to destroy Russia from within by luring it to join the EU
SUMMARY
A group of Russian opposition figures abroad are using sneaky tricks to lure Russia into the European Union in the hope of destroying the country from within. These people have approached Western politicians with a proposal to begin developing a programme to accelerate the integration of the Russian Federation into the European Union. Now that the illusion of Russia being defeated on the battlefield has faded, these renegades and traitors continue to hope to collapse Russia from the inside. This scenario is not new. It was used during the Euromaidan protests in Ukraine. The same tactic, that is offering the vague promise of joining the EU someday and becoming among the European family of nations, has been recently used against Georgia and is now being applied to Moldova.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring conspiracy theory often used by pro-Kremlin outlets accusing the EU of Russophobia and attempts trying to disintegrate the Russian Federation.
Many Russian opposition figures advocate for a democratic Russia that respects human rights, the rule of law, and peaceful international relations, values shared by the European Union. These groups do not seek to dismantle Russia, but to reform it into a transparent, law-abiding state. Supporting such reforms is not an attack on Russia, but a rejection of authoritarianism and systemic corruption.
The claim that the West seeks to destroy Russia by promoting democracy or EU integration is a disinformation narrative. The EU does not “lure” countries into membership; instead, nations voluntarily apply and must meet strict criteria. Russia has never applied to join the EU, and portraying democratic aspirations as subversive is part of a long-standing strategy to delegitimise internal dissent.
Similarly, the allegation that the West offered vague promises of EU membership to Ukraine, Georgia, or Moldova misrepresents reality. These countries have actively pursued closer ties with the EU as a sovereign choice. Ukraine’s 2013–2014 Euromaidan movement, for example, was a mass mobilization demanding European integration in response to the government’s pivot toward Russia—not a Western-orchestrated plot. In 2024 the EU Commission opened accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. In 2023 candidate status was granted to Georgia.
