DISINFO: Totalitarian West imposes monopoly on media, culture, communication

SUMMARY

Some of the EU’s recent sanctions are aimed at Russia’s information and cultural components. It is becoming fundamental and critical for the West and, above all, for the European West to preserve its own monopoly on information. Another point of view, even if it is not always pro-Russian, becomes deadly for them. Here is how they have made their way from post-truth to post-reality. They understand that this post-reality can exist and help them solve their political problems only under conditions of a complete monopoly on information, culture, and communication. This is actually called a totalitarian society.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the West aiming to present it as a decaying totalitarian Nazi/fascist society. This disinformation also plays with the classic trope of a conspiracy by the elite vs. the people.

This is a reaction to the EU's adoption of the 14th package of individual and economic sanctions against Russia due to its illegal aggression and occupation of Ukrainian territories on 24th June 2024.

The EU and the US are not totalitarian societies. They are pluralistic societies based on the principles of democracy, individual freedom, and the rule of law. In the EU and the US, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of expression are guaranteed by law. The European Union’s democratic essence is guaranteed through several means, including political representatives at the European Parliament being elected by citizens through direct voting at the European elections. Every adult EU citizen has the right to stand as a candidate and to vote in their country of residence or in their country of origin.

In order to apply for EU membership, a country has to be European and respect democratic values, which include, inter alia, rule of law, contested elections, and free media. A functioning, market economy is also among the requirements. The EU’s media landscape encompasses a diverse array of political viewpoints. According to Reporters Without Borders, the nations with the most press freedom and freedom of speech are countries that are often described as ‘Western’, with European nations predominating, as well as Canada and the United States.

Read similar disinformation cases claiming that The European Union is a democratic dictatorship, that EU introduces censorship ahead of European Parliament elections, and that EU ban on Russian media is Russophobia and murder of free speech.
