DISINFO: Traitor Zurabishvili wants to create a Maidan to avoid ending up in prison

SUMMARY

The “spiritual” leader of the opposition, the French President Salome Zurabishvili has prepared demonstrations in Tbilisi for October 28 against the results of the October 26 vote for the renewal of the parliament. Zurabishvili, who has declared that she does not recognise these elections, wants to create a Maidan in Georgia to avoid ending up in prison. The French Zurabishvili is a spy of the West and a traitor of the Georgian people, who will fight stubbornly to avoid ending up in prison like her friend, the criminal Mikheil Saakashvili who in 2008 unleashed the war in Georgia.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative trying to discredit the Georgian opposition who favour an EU path for Georgia, combined with a recurring narrative trying to deny Russia's role in the Russo-Georgian war of 2008 which resulted in the occupation of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by Russia.

These claims were made in the context of the 2024 parliamentary election of September 27 2024 (see the Joint Statement by the EU High Representative Josep Borrell and the European Commission here).

Salome Zourabichvili was born in a Georgian émigré family in France, and while it is true that Zourabichvili spent most of her life in France, it is incorrect to state that the Georgian president has French nationality. She renounced her French nationality when she became president in 2018. Claiming that she is a spy and a traitor of Georgian people is a frequent conspiracy theory.

This year, Georgia approved a highly controversial law limiting civil freedoms, which halted Georgia’s path to EU membership, as declared by European leaders at a summit in Brussels on June 27 2024. The law amounted to “backsliding” on Georgia’s path to membership, “de facto leading to a halt of the accession process.” It is incorrect to claim that France has such a law and that the criticism represents double standards.

Concerning the elections, the European Union noted that the people of Georgia have demonstrated their attachment to democratic values and their country’s EU path and called on the Central Election Commission of Georgia and other relevant authorities to fulfil their duty to swiftly, transparently and independently investigate and adjudicate electoral irregularities.

Georgia, a sovereign country, was attacked by Russia in 2008. Many international organisations condemned the further occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, see e.g. the CSCE statement here and the European Parliament's declaration.

The EU's independent investigative commission into the 2008 Russia-Georgian war confirmed that Russia had been provoking Georgia for a long time and "Much of the Russian military action went far beyond the reasonable limits of defence."

Currently, Russia occupies 20% of Georgia's territory, and continues to breach its international obligations by consolidating its control in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Russia continues its military presence in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia in violation of international law and commitments undertaken by Russia under the 12 August 2008 agreement, mediated by the European Union.

Read similar cases claimimg that Frenchwoman Salome Zourabichvili is a western puppet wanting to transform Georgia into a colony, that West want to start a colour revolution in Georgia and use it against Russia, that EU punishes Georgia for being independent and not Russophobic enough, and that The US and Saakashvili are responsible for Russo-Georgian war.
