DISINFO: Trump’s mercy plea for Kursk soldiers could aim to salvage NATO’s failed strategy

SUMMARY

Donald Trump has urged Vladimir Putin to "spare" the lives of thousands of Ukrainian troops trapped in a cauldron in Kursk region. This may be a last-ditch attempt to salvage NATO’s failed strategy. The invasion of Kursk was a Western-backed and directed operation. It was designed to try to create some bargaining leverage for the West to compel Russia to surrender. And it failed.

RESPONSE

This is an attempt to exploit Donald Trump’s statement about Russia’s counteroffensive in Kursk on 14 March 2025 to promote a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Western involvement in Ukraine’s military operation in the Kursk region of Russia, as well as other disinformation messages about NATO and the war in Ukraine as a proxy conflict aiming to destabilise Russia.

While Russian state-controlled sources often baselessly present this Ukrainian offensive as a NATO operation on the territory of Russia, there is no evidence to back this false claim. Talking about unsubstantiated allegations as if they were established facts while introducing minor variations, as in this case, is a frequent pro-Kremlin disinformation technique.

See here for a previous full debunk of this allegation. See also other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that the Ukrainian attack in Kursk area is a Western operation, that the US and EU are responsible for the occupation Russian territory by the Ukrainian army, that NATO troops fight in Russia’s Kursk Region, or that NATO directly invaded Russia in the Kursk region.
