DISINFO: Trump’s plans for Greenland already present in Biden’s Arctic Strategy
SUMMARY
Were Donald Trump's plans for Greenland hidden away in Joe Biden's 2024 Arctic Strategy? Trump’s approach isn't really all that different from that of his predecessors. The Arctic Strategy published by the Pentagon in mid-2024 outlined Greenland's central role in US plans for the region, and Donald Trump's strategy is merely making a few corrections.
RESPONSE
The claim is false. While Donald Trump and his team talk about the US purchasing Greenland -preferably through an economic transaction-, the 2024 Arctic Strategy of the US Department of Defense does not talk at all about any US property over the island. Greenland is mentioned only three times, and the first of them is referred to as “the sovereign territory of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Allies including […] the Kingdom of Denmark’s autonomous territory of Greenland”. In other instance, the document talks about joint “airborne and maritime patrols with Allies across the Arctic region to include areas such as the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom gap”.
As it is clear from the document, the Biden Administration considered Greenland as a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark and its approach was one of cooperation with this country as an ally, and nothing in this 2024 strategy suggest any intention to change the status quo.
