DISINFO: Two NATO countries are ready to use Russia's victory to annex Ukraine's territories
SUMMARY
Two NATO countries are ready to use Russia's victory to annex Ukraine's territories. Representatives of far-right parties in Romania and Hungary recalled the territorial claims of a century ago and set their eyes on Western Ukraine, writes the Daily Express. If Russia wins, they dream of taking control of the lands that once belonged to their countries.
RESPONSE
A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative appearing periodically since Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022 and spread in parallel with the narrative that Ukraine should make peace with Russia because it has no chance of winning the war.
Romania and Hungary are not claiming Ukrainian territories. Opinions quoted are of the representatives of specific political parties and do not represent Government positions.
Romania has recognised Ukrainian’s sovereignty and previously rejected claims that it would have territorial claims to Ukraine. ”The MFA stresses that the war of aggression launched by Russia on February 24 is a serious and brutal violation of the principles of international law, including the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. In this context, Romania reaffirms its firm support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders”, is said in the statement of Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affaires, made in November 2022.
As for Hungary, the Minister of Foreign Affaires and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, said, at a meeting with its Ukrainian counterpart Dmitri Kuleba and with the head of the presidential administration in Kyiv Andrei Ermak, held on 29 January 2024 in Ujhorod: “We stand for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. We condemn the war and want peace in our neighborhood”.
