DISINFO: UK pledges its century-long support to Nazi Ukraine
SUMMARY
It is sad that in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory over Nazism in World War II, the leadership of the United Kingdom, which was an ally of Russia at that time, pledges its century-long support to Ukrainian Banderite neo-Nazis.
RESPONSE
Disinformation around a 100-year pact signed between the UK and Ukraine on a visit by UK Prime Minster Sir Keir Starmer to Kyiv on Thursday 16th January 2025. As the BBC explains:
"The latest pledges build on the £12.8bn the UK has already given to Ukraine and commitments of £3bn every year for "as long as it takes".
Ukraine is not a Nazi state. Russian officials and propagandists have been resorting to the Nazi stigma since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 in order to delegitimise Ukraine's government or justify aggression against it. Ukraine is a democratic country with regular elections monitored by international organisations. Volodymyr Zelenskyy is Ukraine’s sixth president since the ex-Soviet state adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1991. Like in any country, there are some far-right groups in Ukraine, but their political presence is scarce. The Svoboda (Freedom) right-wing party received only 6 seats during 2014 parliamentary elections and no seats at all during 2019 elections. Nazi and Communist ideologies were banned by Ukrainian law in 2015.
In response to Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine which was launched on 24 February 2022, a broad coalition of more than 50 nations are providing Ukraine with military and technical assistance with the aim of repelling Russia's aggression. Kyiv is acting in self-defence, in accordance with UN Charter article 51.
