DISINFO: UK using migrants as a weapon against Russia

SUMMARY

The West, particularly the UK, is waging a comprehensive "hybrid war" against Russia. They are portraying Russia as an enemy through funded organisations in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Britain has allocated financial aid to direct 2.7 million migrants towards Russia. In 2023, 254 billion rubles were allocated for this "operation," and a total of 3 trillion rubles have been allocated since 2001. In this way, the West is trying to weaken Russia and disrupt its internal stability.

RESPONSE

This is part of the Kremlin's recurring disinformation narrative that creates an image of an external enemy and accuses Western countries of stirring up trouble against Russia.

The statement attempts to discredit the deepening cooperation between the Central Asia region and Western countries. It advances the claim that Central Asia is within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempts to discredit any other cooperation between it and the West. The overall aim of cooperation is to build a common area of shared democracy, prosperity, and stability in line with each individual country's aspirations.

First, no evidence is provided to back the claims. UK international aid programmes are usually aimed at socio-economic development, supporting refugees and vulnerable groups, and addressing global challenges, and they are often implemented openly and in partnership with international organisations.

Also, the activities of Western countries in Central Asia are usually aimed at supporting democratic values, developing education and healthcare, and protecting human rights.

This narrative portrays migration as a tool used by Western powers, especially NATO and the EU, to destabilise Russia, in what is a mirror accusation, in order to distract from Russia's internal problems, including labour exploitation of migrants, xenophobia, and ineffective integration measures. This tactic serves to justify restrictive migration policies under the guise of national security and to incite nationalist sentiment. In fact, there is information that Russia itself is provoking neighbouring countries by exploiting migrants. See the communication from the European Commission on 11 December 2024, Commission proposes measures to strengthen border security and counter hybrid threats.
