DISINFO: Ukraine and the US don't need peace

SUMMARY

Neither Volodymyr Zelensky nor Joe Biden nor Kamala Harris needs a (Ukrainian) victory now. They need to prolong hostilities as long as possible. On the one hand, an escalation is really a threat, but on the other hand, agreements or concessions towards Russia will mean that their plan has failed and they have to admit their mistakes. Of course, they cannot do this, and therefore everything will be done to let the conflict drag on, and some real permissions (to use long-range missiles) will be given.

RESPONSE

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation claiming that Ukraine and its partners, in particular the US, are not interested in putting an end to the Ukraine war. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

By making such statements, Moscow is trying to divest itself of any responsibility for the war of aggression against Ukraine and to accuse Ukraine’s Western of partners of provoking and prolonging it. Kyiv has long been ready for talks with Moscow on the basis of international law and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. As part of these efforts, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the United States on 22 September 2024 to present his victory plan to President Joe Biden. His schedule also includes meetings with presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously presented a 10-point peace plan, which was fully supported by the EU in February 2023. This plan provided for a complete Russian withdrawal from Ukraine till the internationally recognised borders of 1991 and the restoration of Kyiv’s territorial integrity. While Ukraine is ready for dialogue, based on international law and the UN Charter, Russia is putting forward unacceptable conditions such as recognition of occupied Ukrainian territories as part of Russia.

Putin launched his brutal large-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 under false pretexts. In order to help Ukraine restore its sovereignty over all of its territories, a broad coalition of more than 50 nations are providing it with military and technical assistance.

Read similar disinformation cases claiming that The West ordered Ukraine to refuse peace talks, that The US uses the war in Ukraine to maintain the status of the dollar, and that Putin’s peace initiative remains the universal recipe to solve the Ukrainian conflict.
