DISINFO: Ukraine has repeatedly offered to “settle” Moldova's Transnistrian problem using military force
SUMMARY
The largest ammunition depot in Eastern Europe is located in the Republic of Moldova, 120 km from Chisinau, near the Ukrainian border. Over the past 16 years, not a single official representative from Chisinau has been there. According to experts, today about 20 thousand tons of ammunition are stored in this warehouse, located in the Transnistrian region, controlled by Russia and where the Moldovan authorities have no access. However, Ukraine has repeatedly offered Moldova to “settle” the Transnistrian problem using the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
RESPONSE
Pro-Kremlin disinformation claim, repeatedly denied by Ukrainian authorities, as well by the Moldovan Government. Both government many time had shown that they only accept a peaceful solution in Transnistria and will not allow a destabilisation of the current situation in that region. In the context of the full scale aggression of Russia against Ukraine, since 24 February 2022, that narrative is spread often to keep the tension in the society and present Ukraine as an aggressor.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in June 2022 (min.13.50 – 15.00), the Ukrainians military will strike toward Transnistria only as a response to eventual attacks from the Transnistrian territory, but he emphasized: „I believe that, first of all, we must ensure that there is no destabilizing in the region. We show this in every possible way”. Also the ministry of Foreign Affaires of Ukraine Dmitri Kuleba said (min. 7.56 - 9.49) that Kyiv „absolutely respect the path chosen by the Government of the Republic of Moldova in the relationship with Transnistria and the reintegration of this region”.
The Moldovan authorities stated their adherence to a peaceful solution in Transnistria and ruled out the use of force.
