DISINFO: Ukraine is an instrument of the legal war between the West and Russia

DISINFORMATION CASE DETAILS

DISINFO: Ukraine is an instrument of the legal war between the West and Russia

SUMMARY

Ukrainian lawsuits that are pouring in like peas are not those of Ukraine. Ukraine acts as an instrument for relaying the acts of the legal war of the West against Russia. International courts today are no longer international institutions; they are the organs of power of supranational groupings.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukraine under external control.

Ukraine is an independent, sovereign state. It has the right to decide what lawsuits to file and against whom. The lawsuits against Russia were filed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine in accordance with the procedures established by international courts.

Ukraine has sued Russia for a number of violations, including violation of the Terrorist Financing Convention and International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, International Convention on the Law of the Sea, as well as concerning violations of human rights in Crimea and the downing of MH17. Overall, Ukraine has filed 12 cases with relevant courts.

International courts are independent interstate institutions assigned by international law to settle disputes between the states (such as the International Court of Justice; see also here) and their citizens (only the European Court of Human Rights).
