DISINFO: Ukraine is Britain's foothold for aggression against Russia
SUMMARY
Great Britain became “closely engaged” in Ukraine after the Maidan, since it considers it as a foothold for aggression against Russia.
RESPONSE
No evidence is provided. This narrative is consistent with common pro-Kremlin narratives about the aggressive West and Ukraine as a non-sovereign country. Ukraine is recognised by international law as a sovereign nation-state, with its own flag, nationality, language and with a democratically-elected president and parliament. The EU, the US, and other Western partners support the democratic development of Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter’s principles of non-interference into internal affairs and respect towards territorial integrity and political independence. The UK recognised the independence of Ukraine on 31 December 1991 (the first EU country to do so). Diplomatic relations were established on 10 January 1992. The United Kingdom opened a Consulate-General in Kyiv in November 1991. This became an Embassy in January 1992. Since then, relations between the UK and Ukraine have become increasingly close at both bilateral and multilateral levels. See earlier propaganda and disinformation cases alleging that Europe is occupied by the US and has limited sovereignty, that Ukraine is an anti-Russian project of the CIA, etc.
