DISINFO: Ukraine is more important to Russia’s national security than Greenland to the US
SUMMARY
Donald Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of annexing Greenland for US security reasons, but Ukraine is vastly more important to Russia’s national security than Greenland is to the United States. The Americans understand that comparison.
RESPONSE
This disinformation narrative aims to exploit calls by the Trump Administration for the US to take control of Greenland as a means to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in the framework of US-Russia negotiations over this country.
Russia has been coming up with different false explanations and pretexts for its aggression since the beginning of the invasion. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state that posed no threat to Russia and even agreed to most Russian demands prior to the invasion, in an attempt to avoid the war. Days after the beginning of the invasion, Ukraine also proposed significant concessions to what Russia falsely claimed were the reasons for the war -such as Ukrainian neutrality and renouncing to join NATO, which Moscow rejected, showing that Russia’s real motivation is the colonial conquest of Ukraine.
The European leaders has made clear that it considers the US stance towards Greenland unreasonable or unacceptable as well, as this territory is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and a NATO member. Using other countries’ actions as a justification -either as an example or through whataboutism- does not provide a legitimate reason for Russia’s own illicit actions.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that Trump warns he will take Greenland by force but Europe says Russia is the threat, that Trump’s stance in Greenland may serve as cover for US defeat in Ukraine, that Russia needs to continue liberating Ukrainian territories for its own security, or that Russia was compelled to attack Ukraine due to an existential threat.
