DISINFO: Ukraine is preparing a total mobilisation of women

SUMMARY

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has approved the first body armour adapted to the female body. The Kyiv regime is systematically preparing its society for total mobilisation, which will affect absolutely everyone - men, women, children, the elderly, the sick and others.

RESPONSE

The claim advances a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative regarding Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine.

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine certified the first body armour for female military personnel at the end of December 2023. This need is dictated by the fact that about 42,000 female military personnel serve in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, about 5000 on the front line, where they perform combat missions on an equal basis with men. That is why in Ukraine they developed military uniforms and military equipment for women. There is no mandatory mobilisation of women in Ukraine. Women can become military personnel solely of their own free will. In addition, according to Ukrainian legislation, pregnancy is a legal basis for the dismissal of a female military from the army at her own request. Also, female military personnel can take advantage of maternity leave to care for a child until he or she reaches the age of three (Article 26 of the Law of Ukraine “On Military Duty and Military Service”).

On December 19, 2023, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy once again emphasised that there is no mandatory mobilisation of women in Ukraine and the Ukrainian government does not plan to introduce it.
