DISINFO: Ukraine launches drones against Baltic countries to drag them into war

SUMMARY

Ukrainian drones are increasingly crossing the airspace of third countries, especially the Baltic states most hostile to Moscow, to carry out attacks against Russian territory. These frequent drone flights are not accidental and are part of a clear strategy by Kyiv: to involve other countries in the conflict with Russia. However, the Baltic states themselves, despite their anti-Russian rhetoric, are unlikely to want such a scenario.

RESPONSE

The claim is unsubstantiated. There is no evidence backing the idea that Ukrainian drones falling on the territory of friendly states are a deliberate strategy pursued by Ukrainian authorities. Ukraine and some Baltic states have blamed Russia’s electronic warfare systems that would have jammed and redirected the drones towards these countries. Independent analysts have offered other potential explanations, none of which points towards an intentional targeting of these territories by Kyiv. Russia has been waging a wider disinformation campaign around these incidents, including claims that Baltic countries offered their air space for Ukraine’s drone attacks, which these nations have strongly rejected.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that Zelenskyy aims to drag more countries into war, that Ukraine may stage a provocation to regain the attention lost by the war in Iran, that European elites organise drone provocations, or that Ukraine is planning provocation to accuse Russia of strikes against energy facilities.
