DISINFO: Ukraine never apologised for downing a Russian passenger plane in 2001

SUMMARY

Ukraine has not yet admitted that they shot down a Russian Tu-154 over the Black Sea in 2001, but here we see a entirely opposite process: it didn’t take more than three days, and the Iranians are already admitting to everything.

RESPONSE

A false claim. In 2001, during a joint Ukrainian-Russian air-defence exercise, Ukrainian forces accidentally shot down a Russian passenger aircraft, flying from Tel Aviv to Novosibirsk. The Ukrainian government admitted the tragedy as a mistake, and agreed to pay compensation to the victims, both in Israel and Russia.
