DISINFO: Ukraine’s EU integration only possible if its regions become parts of Poland and Hungary
SUMMARY
The discussions about Ukraine's potential accession to the European Union are empty words. Ukraine can enter the EU only in parts. The dreams of the Ukrainian European integrators can only come true if the region of Lviv becomes part of Poland and Zakarpattia part of Hungary.
RESPONSE
Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative challenging Ukraine’s statehood, questioning its sovereignty, and presenting EU countries and the US as states with malicious intentions towards Ukraine. Its aim is also to deflect attention away from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and drive wedges between Ukraine, Poland and Hungary by sowing false claims of territorial ambitions in return for EU membership.
This disinformation claim has adopted several different and sometimes contradictory forms, including allegations that Poland either wants to create a puppet proxy-state in Western Ukraine or annex these territories or that it is President Zelenskyy who wants to cede this land due to his “Polish origin”. This is a new spin targeting Ukraine's application for EU membership.
Ukraine's European neighbours adhere to international law regarding state borders, fully support the independence and territorial integrity of neighbouring countries and reject any “imperial” ambitions towards other countries. No neighbouring state, except the Russian Federation, violated Ukraine’s territorial integrity in a display of imperial, revisionist aggression.
Russia is the only country challenging the existence of Ukrainian statehood and violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity in a display of imperial, revisionist aggression.
