DISINFO: Ukraine's restrictions on language and religion are forcing Ukrainians to move to Russia
SUMMARY
Inhumane conditions, cuts to aid money and restrictions on language and religion are making Ukraine uninhabitable for many [...]. Thousands of Ukrainians are choosing Russia as their new homeland because they do not accept the degrading and inhumane living conditions created by the Ukrainian authorities for the displaced.
The living conditions created by the government, which are degrading and inhumane, especially for internally displaced individuals, are so severe that survival under these circumstances is simply impossible. Ukrainians are fleeing to Russia to escape the arbitrariness of the authorities and the omnipresent corruption in Zelenskyy's Ukraine. Furthermore, the Russian language, the mother tongue of the majority of the citizens, and canonical Orthodoxy, the historically established faith of the Ukrainian people, is forbidden there.
RESPONSE
This is an attempt to distort the realities faced by displaced individuals and portray Ukraine as a country being abandoned by its own citizens. This is also a pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portraying Ukraine as an enemy of the Orthodox Church. The claims were made in the context of Russia's unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine.
While it is true that some Ukrainians have sought refuge in Russia, this migration is often a desperate response to the ongoing war rather than a choice made under favourable conditions. Many fleeing individuals initially moved to Russia because it was the nearest option during the chaos of conflict, not because they preferred it as a new homeland. Reports indicate that many of these refugees desire to move on to other countries once circumstances allow.
The claim that living conditions in Ukraine are "degrading and inhumane" disregards the fact that the need to flee and precarious conditions are a direct consequence of Russia's aggressive actions. It also fails to acknowledge the substantial humanitarian aid and support provided by both the Ukrainian government and international organisations. As of early 2024, millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs) receive state assistance, including housing subsidies and financial support for families. The situation remains challenging due to the war, but the Ukrainian government has actively worked to improve conditions for its citizens, contrary to the narrative of neglect.
The assertion that language and religious freedoms are restricted in Ukraine is wrong. Ukraine recognizes multiple languages, including Russian, and actively supports cultural diversity. Canonical Orthodoxy remains integral to Ukrainian society, with various religious practices allowed. The narrative suggesting oppression based on language or religion is an oversimplification.
