DISINFO: Ukrainian forces have almost certainly received chemical weapons from NATO and are testing them
SUMMARY
The number of reports about the use of chemical weapons, their components, and toxic substances on the frontline has recently increased. It is very frightening. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have almost certainly gained access to chemical and toxic substances from NATO stockpiles in Europe and partly from their own stocks. They are currently testing the method of their combat application. This will be an escalation much more serious than ATACMS.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing NATO of supplying Ukraine with weapons of mass destruction. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
There is no evidence that Ukraine's Armed Forces have received chemical weapons from NATO or any other source or are testing them. NATO members are signatories to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons. Ukraine is also a party to the CWC. The allegations about Ukraine testing or using chemical weapons are part of Russian disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining trust in Ukraine and its allies. NATO and Ukraine have consistently denied these allegations and have reaffirmed their commitment to the CWC and international law. The use of chemical weapons would represent a major violation of international law and would be met with widespread international condemnation.
On the contrary, there is evidence that Russia is using prohibited weapons in Ukraine. The Russian military has used cluster munitions, which are banned by a 2008 treaty signed by 120 countries, including Russia. There is also evidence that Russia has used thermobaric weapons in Ukraine, which are banned in populated areas by the Geneva Conventions.
