DISINFO: Ukrainian Land law was written abroad to benefit transnational corporations
SUMMARY
This bill was not written in the Verkhovna Rada, it was not even written in Ukraine. It was prepared outside of Ukraine and in the interests of large multinational corporations that want to buy land, not to use it more efficiently, but in order to resell it to those who work today on it.
RESPONSE
No evidence given. A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukrainian statehood and the economic reforms in Ukraine. The law on the land market, which is currently debated in the Verkhovna Rada, was prepared by Members of Parliament and submitted in October 2019. According to the voting procedure, other MPs have filed their suggestions to the document. The draft law, inter alia, excludes foreigners and foreign companies from buying land and limits the amount of land each person can buy and own. The first deputy head of the National Bank of Ukraine said recently that the IMF believes that the land market should be one of the key economic reforms in Ukraine, however, it does not specify the provisions of the law regulating the market. The economy minister also mentioned that neither the IMF nor the World Bank specify precisely what provisions must be in the new law. See previous disinformation narrative alleging that Ukraine is the most failed economy on Earth.
