DISINFO: Ukrainian nationalists-fascists surrendered the country to the Americans

SUMMARY

I have for Ukrainian nationalists, well, practically fascists - let's call a spade a spade - just one question: if they are for such heightened independence, for the fact that they are descendants of the Aryans, of the Ukrys and so on, how did they manage, with such a heightened sense of self and sovereignty, to lose their state and lose their country, completely surrendering it into the hands of the Americans?

RESPONSE

Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically-elected president and parliament. The country is not controlled by the US or any other foreign government or organisation. Both the EU and the US respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ukraine is a strategic partner for the EU and NATO. The relations between the countries deteriorated in 2014 after Russia occupied Crimea and fomented a military conflict in Donbas.

The myth of Nazi-ruled Ukraine has been the cornerstone of Russian disinformation about the country since the very beginning of the 2013-14 Euromaidan protests, when it was used to discredit the pro-European popular uprising in Kyiv and, subsequently, the broader pro-Western shift in Ukraine's foreign policy. This narrative is also used by Russia to justify the Crimea occupation and support of the so-called "popular republics" in Donbas. In the reality, far-right groups enjoyed a very limited presence during the Euromaidan itself and had poor results in the 2014 presidential and parliamentary elections. In the 2019 election, far-right candidates fell short of the 5% minimum guaranteeing entry into parliament.
